Bihar batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player to be sold in the history of IPL auction on Monday, November 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Suryavanshi was sold for a whopping Rs 1.10 crore to Rajasthan Royals after an intense bidding war with Delhi Capitals (DC).
Vaibhav is the first player who is younger than the IPL itself to be bought in the auction. He will get to work with one of the finest minds of Indian cricket, Rahul Dravid, who returned to the Rajasthan Royals as their head coach.
Suryavanshi, born in Samastipur, recently hit the fastest hundred by an Indian in Under-19 Tests, achieving the milestone against the Australia Under-19 team at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The 13-year-old smashed his hundred in just 58 balls in his maiden red-ball match for the India Under-19 team.
His 58-ball hundred is only behind former England all-rounder Moeen Ali, who hit a 56-ball hundred for England Under-19 in 2005. Vaibhav hit 14 boundaries and 4 sixes in a destructive knock. Earlier, in January 2024, he became the fourth-youngest Indian to make his debut in a recorded first-class match at the age of 12 years and 284 days in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 against Shams Mulani’s Mumbai.
Suryavanshi played for Bihar in the 2023 edition of the Cooch Behar Trophy and in one of the games against Jharkhand, he scored 151 runs off 128 balls with the help of 22 fours and three sixes. He further scored 76 in the second innings of the same game. Suryavanshi also played in a quadrangular series involving India U19 A, India U19 B, England U19 and Bangladesh U19. He got scores of 53, 74, 0, 41 and 0 in the tournament.
In a media interaction after Vaibhav Suryvanshi’s Ranji debut, his father, Sanjeev revealed that the young teenager participated in six major tournaments in 2023. He also said it’s a matter of pride for his son to play against players like Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, and Dhawal Kulkarni. He described his son as an explosive batter and that he confident that Vaibhav will score a lot of runs in this tournament and will continue to showcase his batting skills for India in the future.

Sanjeev also mentioned his own love for cricket, stating that he used to play cricket in the village and noticed Vaibhav’s interest in the sport at the age of 5. Since then, he consistently guided Vaibhav to play cricket. When he was 10, Vaibhav used to play with senior players and performed well. Sanjeev initiated Vaibhav’s cricket training in Samastipur and later in Patna, where Vaibhav dedicatedly worked hard, resulting in his early entry into playing Ranji cricket for Bihar.

“Woh ab sirf humra bituwa nahi pura Bihar ka bituwa hai (He is not just my son now but entire Bihar’s son),” Sanjiv told PTI. “My son has worked hard. At the age of 8 years, he excelled at U-16 district trials. I would take him for his cricket coaching to Samastipur and then take him back,” he recalled the days of hardships.
“Not just investment, it’s big investment. (Aapko kya bataye humne toh apna zameen tak bech diya. Abhi bhi halat pura sudhra nahi (I have sold my land. Financial issues are still there).
“Rajasthan Royals had called him for trials in Nagpur. Vikram Rathour sir (batting coach) gave a match situation where he had to score 17 in an over. Bituwa ne 3 chakka mara. Trials mein aat chakka aur char chauwaa mara (He smashed three sixes. At trials, he hit eight sixes and four fours). He just wants to play cricket and nothing else. A few years back he loved Doremon, not anymore,” the father claimed proudly.
