HISTORY/MARKS:
The American-born David Haviland settled in Limoges, France in 1842 operating a porcelain exporting business to the USA. He purchased white ware from various factories and shipped it to his New York decorating studio. In 1847, he established a decorating studio in Limoges. He started producing porcelain in Limoges in 1865 and decorating it on site. His sons, Charles Edward and Theodore, continued the prosperous business after David’s death in 1879. Theodore left to establish his own firm in 1892. Charles Edward continued Haviland & Co. until his death in 1921. It bankrupt under his son’s leadership in 1930 and the molds were sold in 1931. In 1941, Theodore’s son, William, was able to obtain the rights to the old Haviland & Co. marks and molds and the company was reorganized as Haviland & Co. William retired in 1957 and the company was carried on by his sons. When the sons retired in 1972, management of the company was turned over to the Cerabati Group under the name of Haviland SA. The company remains in business today. On the saucer, the underglaze mark (in green) on this is mark #11 (Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition) which was used from 1888-1896, but it also has the red overglaze mark #13 used 1889-1931. The cup has red overglaze mark #33 used 1903-1925. It's green underglaze mark is smeared and unreadable. The cup has the impressed mark #M dated by the havilandonline site as used 1894-1957. The Ranson mold (blank #1) was introduced on July 18, 1893 and used until the factory closed in 1931, but the molds were purchased by Theodore Haviland and moved to another pottery. So, the marriage of the cup and saucer must have occurred somewhere is this time period.
