Description
This useful item was designed by Harry Laylon, and sold by Chase only from 1941 & ’42, so not easy to find. It is listed in the catalog as available in either polished copper or chrome with white painted spiral sides. This one has black paintedspirals so not sure if that was a treatment done without being noted in the various catalogs, or if aftermarket change. Overall condition is good. The chrome base has many fine scratches, a couple of obvious scrapes, and other marks on the chrome. There are a few nicks to the black paint where you can see the underlying brass base. One screw that holds the spiral to the base is missing, and it appears that the hole where the screw should go into the spiral is not drilled out. That leads me to the conclusion that this piece may have been a sample that was not marketed. Perhaps someone can drill out the teeny hole, which is marked on the bottom of the spiral, and find the proper screw to fit. Overall still a nice piece and maybe a rare variant. It does have the Chase mark on the bottom although it is somewhat obscured by many scratches.
