Antique French Theodore Haviland Limoges Oyster Plate
Theodore Haviland made this antique antique French Limoges oyster plate, as is marked in red under glaze on the back of the plate. There is something pristine about the design. The border shape consists of five simple curves. The five oyster wells themselves are rounded toward the rim with a little dip toward the center well. The shape of these wells is typical of Theodore Haviland, evidenced by pictures in "Oyster Plates" by Karsnitz. The perfectly round center sauce well is also a typical choice of Theodore Haviland. The shape of the wells and the sauce well are accentuated by gilding. The edge is also gilded with a double band divided by a white band. Extending from the exterior bands are green scalloped arrow shapes with gilding in the center and scalloped gilding along the edges. Between the arrows are tiny three-leafed gilt shapes. The hand painting is beautifully done. The diameter is 8.25 inches. There is a tiny firing flaw above the writing on the inner rim. Overall the plate is in excellent condition.
In addition to the red marks mentioned there is an impressed mark "TH" and also the name of the retailer "S. & G. Gump Co, the fine San Francisco retailer which still exists. The luster and the absence of use marks suggests this plate was probably for display only.
