Two (2) extravagant antique Haviland porcelain dinner or service plates. Rich cobalt bands and (3) reserves, embell
ished with elaborate raised gilt paste decorations ~ scrolls, medallions, and delicate fish scales; etched gilt flowers and ornaments. Entwined gilt monogram "WB" in the center. Gilt trim. St Louis Mo 1904"; there are also embossed marks.
Provenance: William Berri was a prominent New York businessman, owner of the Brooklyn Standard Union newspaper; he resided at 465 Clinton Ave., in the Beaux-Arts Clinton Hill area of Brooklyn, N.Y. Designed by Mercein Thomas and built in 1902, in the Renaissance Revival style, the home is
recognized as one of the finest residences in Brooklyn.
The Haviland plates are likely part of a larger set that was ordered by Mr. Berri at the World's Fair Exposition in 1904, where art of many nations was displayed, including the French government's display which invoked "
the Louis XVI style, a period in which French artisans dominated the decorative arts .. the French government sent a reproduction of the Chateau Grand Trianon at Versailles .. At the
Limoges display, well-to-do fairgoers could order specialized patterns .. designed by Theodore Haviland".
Both plates are in very good condition ~ no damage or flaws.
