Antique Charles Field Haviland/GDM Limoges Cobalt & Gilt Oyster Plate

Pictured on page 82 of the reference book, "Collecting Oyster Plates", by Jeffrey Snyder, this is a stunning French Limoges cobalt oyster plate. The maker was Charles Field Haviland and Gerard, Dufraisseix & Morel. There is an all over design in gilt against the rich cobalt. The designs in gilt are water lilies, scalloped crescents and small flowers. There is brushed gilt on the scalloped border. The center sauce well is blue with a white center with additional gilt decorations. The shape of the center well causes it to appear to spiral into the outer wells. On the reverse is the maker's mark, "CFH/GDM France", in green. The marks date the plate to 1881-1890. The diameter is 9 1/8 inches at the widest point. The oyster plate is in pristine condition. It was probably a cabinet piece.
